  1942:  Anne Frank receives a diary 

   

  On this day in 1942, Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl living in Amsterdam, received a diary for her thirteenth birthday. 

   

  After World War II during which Anne perished in a concentration camp, her diary was published as Diary of a Young Girl and has since become one of the most famous and beloved books in the world.
